Individual Therapy
Life doesn’t have to be the way it is today.
Let’s face it–life happens, and it isn’t always pleasant. Most of the things that happen in the world around us, and to us, are beyond our control. That’s true for everyone.
The difference between people who are generally happy in life and people who are miserable is in the way they deal with what happens. This is what Therapy is about. Learning how to change the way we respond to the world around us.
We have multiple ways of responding to what happens in the world.
- There are those things we do knowingly.
- There are the things we do out of reaction when we are angry or scared.
- And then there are the things we do out of habit, below our awareness.
When we are making the logical choice, we have time to think so we can use our wisdom and experience to make the best choice. When we are reactive, or unaware of the choices we are making, we frequently make poor decisions.
We all have blind spots and struggles with pausing before we react in certain situations. Our focus will be on giving you the support you need to increase your ability to pause and grow your awareness.
Changing these reactions and habits is difficult at best. Doing it alone can be overwhelming. The support of a therapist makes it more manageable.
How therapy can work.
We start by looking at what is going on in your life. Of course, we will talk about what is going on that has you looking for help, but we will also be looking at what is going right in your life. We will look at what you want to get out of treatment, what are your goals. Based upon all that information, we will plan together how to move forward. I will provide as little or as much guidance as you need to do this.
Then, we will work toward your goal, helping you learn to utilize what you are already doing well to help where we can and to teach you skills where needed. We will also work on helping to reduce the power of overwhelming emotions that trigger you to make poor decisions making it easier to pause and think properly. When we have achieved your goals, we will reassess.
This process might take a handful of visits; it might extend for a few months. There might be a few sessions down the road just to ‘check-in.’
